Pest FAQs

Q: Is it safe to have my house sprayed?A: All of the products we use are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency and they determine where and how the chemicals are to be used.

Q: Do I have to leave my house when its treated?A: Rarely do customers need to leave during or after treatments. If this is required, we will inform you before application so that you can make arrangements. We try to use chemicals without an odor for our customers comfort. Of course when exterior applications are made, it is not necessary to leave.

Q: I have pets is it safe to use mouse poison?A: Anytime poison is used, it is placed in secure locked containers. These secure containers keep pets and children from accessing the poison. We always try to place it in areas pets cannot access.

Q: Can I buy the chemicals from you?A: No. You must have training and certification by the state to use or purchase the chemicals we use.

Q: If I sign up for service, how does your contract work?A: We do not have contracts, only agreements. Our agreements can be changed anytime at the customer's request. This flexible plan insures our customer gets only the services they need or want without locking them into a long service they do not desire to have.

Q: Where do the bugs die?A: On exterior applications, the vast majority of bugs die on the ground surrounding the house or building.

Q: Why do I still have bugs inside my house after you treated the outside?A: Exterior treatments will kill bugs that cross the chemical barrier, however, it does not kill the insects that have entered before treatment or insects that are already established within the house.

Q: Why do I still see bugs on my house after an exterior treatment?A: Most bugs are free flying and while the chemicals we use kills the bugs, it does not create an invisible barrier preventing insects from flying to your house.

Q: I see bugs crawling on areas that were treated. Why aren't they dying?A: The chemicals we use do not kill instantly. It may take anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours to kill once contact is made. Insecticides that kill quickly have little or no residual ability. We use chemicals with residual properties for best results.

Wildlife FAQs

Q: Are you properly licensed?A: Yes, we carry all the necessary licensing and comply with all local, state, and federal regulations.

Q: Do you have proper insurance?A: Yes, we carry general liability insurance and workman's compensation on our employees.

Q: What is an inspection?A: Our inspections are done from the ground, on the roof and often times in the attic. This ensures the most thorough inspection of all areas to determine entry points, damage, and potential problem areas.

Q: Can you check my attic?A: Certainly, we may be able to identify visible wiring damage among other things. However, if you already suspect wiring damage (i.e. your lights are flickering, your doorbell no longer rings, etc) it's always a good idea to call an electrician.

Q: Can you repair the damaged areas?A: Yes. If we can't do it, we will recommend a qualified contractor who can. This is the most important part as it is the only way to prevent the problem from happening again.

Q: What materials do you use to repair damages?A: Typically we use sheet metal or hardware cloth to repair holes. Most repairs are in hidden areas and the repair work is barely visible. If the repair requires a carpenter, we can arrange for them to complete the repairs. We use heavy duty screening for attic vents. We use hardware cloth to screen off odd shaped vents. We carry a wide variety of chimney caps and we can special order custom sizes if needed.

Q: Can you recognize and repair other potential problem areas?A: Yes. If we see something that we think could be a problem in the future, we will bring it to your attention and let you decide if you would like us to repair it or not.

Q: Do you have a guarantee on your repairs?A: All of our repairs (with the exception of raccoon repairs) have guarantees.

Q: What does your repair guarantee include?A: Our repair guarantee simply states that if an animal gets back through our repairs, we will remove the animal(s) and repair the original damage for FREE!

Q: How many traps do you set?A: A minimum of two, more if needed. This will be determined by your pest & wildlife technician.

Q: Where are the traps set?A: It depends on what type of animal we are trying to catch. If you have squirrels in your attic, the cages will be set on the roof near the entry hole. If you have skunks, the traps are set at the entrance on the ground. Raccoon cages are typically set on the ground unless it is necessary to do the job on the roof.

Q: If I need some skunks removed, will they spray when caught?A: Very rarely with the specially designed skunk cages that we use. Our cages are almost completely enclosed so that when you do catch a skunk it is safe to carefully walk by the cage without the skunk spraying you. However, it is not wise to disturb the cage in any manner or you might get a surprise.

Q: I have a raccoon family in my chimney; can you remove them safely and quickly?A: Yes. When we remove a raccoon family from a chimney, the process is typically complete within an hour. The raccoon family is also allowed to remain together so the mother can continue to care for her young. We will then install a chimney cap to prevent future problems.

Q: Do you relocate wildlife?A: Yes. If the customer desires. However, we will only relocate healthy squirrels, raccoons, woodchucks, and chipmunks.

Q: How do I know the relocated animals aren't coming back to my property?A: Our company policy is to comply with local regulations. We feel a 20 mile radius is sufficient enough to prevent animals from returning to your property.

Q: If an animal must be put to sleep, what method do you use?A: We use a humane method that is approved by the American Veterinary Association. Call our office and ask an expert technician if you would like more details.

Q: How do I get in touch with my technician once trapping has started?A: You will be given your technician's cell phone number. They answer their phones daily from 8-5. You may call at any time of day or night. If needed leave a message and he will return your call promptly. You may also call our office and leave a message with the office personnel.

Q: What if I just have a general question?A: Feel free to call our office. We do not use an answering service so only qualified personnel answers the phone. They can answer any question you may have.

Q: If an animal is trapped over the weekend, will there be a technician available to remove it?A: Yes. Someone is always working during the weekend. If you get a catch, simply call before 10AM and notify the person on duty. Trapping will proceed as usual.

Q: If I get a catch, how quickly can you respond?A: We make every effort to pick up your animal as quickly as possible.

Q: Who checks the traps?A: Sometimes we ask capable homeowner's to check the traps and notify us when there is a catch. It will be placed in a location that is easily visible to the customer. This allows the cages to be monitored regularly and it allows you, the customer, to save money by eliminating any unnecessary trips. If we are unable to place the cages in an easily visible location, we will provide the complete service from the beginning to end.

Q: What do you charge?A: Please call our office for current pricing information. A typical job involves the following:
1. Set up and comprehensive inspection - one fee includes both which are done during the initial visit.
2. Removal and monitoring of activity.
3. Repairs-we will give you a quote for repairs during our initial visit. You can then decide if you would like us to do the repairs or if you want to do them yourself.
4. Prevention or maintenance - again we will give you a quote and you can decide to take these additional prevention measures which are highly recommended.

Q: Do you accept credit cards?A: Yes, we accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.

Q: What training and/or qualifications do you or your technicians have?A: The C.E.O. of American Pest Solutions is a degreed wildlife biologist. Our technicians have field experience in various aspects in wildlife management. Very few of our competitors have this degree of education.

Q: How long have you been in business?A: Our company was founded in 1990 and has served many thousands of customers in that time. To date, we still have a spotless record with the Better Business Bureau in both Minnesota and Wisconsin.
